WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

A Strange kind of Love that SOLD OUT

Posted over 2 years ago
I just hate when people don't stick with the plan. You see... some days ago my aunt offered me the ride from the train station to the pavilion, but she went shopping instead, which made me hurry and mentally sketch a plan B. Well, I managed to go underground and get to _El Corte Inglés_ where she picked me up and *then* drove me there. In my plans I was supposed to be at the Pavilion at 9 p.m. but only got there a quarter to ten (at least got there!).Anyway, at the time I was getting closer there was this extensive queue of parked cars and a enormous crowd moving towards a building – for sure that was the place (either it was for some Peter Murphy or it was a ultra-secret Masonic jamboree). At the entrance there were people everywhere, it was clearly impossible to look for some acquaintances, believe me. Well, I guess that's what is expected for *one* lousy concert... I mean, for only 10 euros, a Peter Murphy concert in Portugal couldn’t be missed for nothing in the world, especially if it’s one of a kind in Europe... (Yes, I was told he interrupted the recording sessions of his upcoming album «Go Away White», elapsing in New York, in order to perform only in Vila Nova de Gaia – he really wanted to be here.)The minute I got to the main floor I realised it was impossible for me to be there and watch the show, I couldn't even see the stage from there sheesh! (one of the inconveniences of not being a tall person...) So, I ran to the upper floor and sat on a nice spot at the balcony – it was a bit far, but at least I managed to see the whole thing without being squashed. *10:00 PM*Everyone was excited as hell: they started whistling and got pretty loud calling for Peter, but neither Peter nor his gang appeared on stage. Then suddenly someone got on stage and was received with a massive applause, 'til we all realised it was only some guy from the organization hah.We stood static waiting for his words. The moment he turned on his microphone was very painful – if is intention was to make everybody a bit deafer, mission accomplished. The guy came in talking about the mayor and how great he his by promoting events like this one blablablabla and how Vila Nova de Gaia will become the centre of musical events of Minho (right, let's wait and see), and gave us the FYI there are lots of concerts planned, great concerts, concerts with quality. And then he ended his speech with "like PETER MURPHY!!"It didn't take much longer to listen to some bass lines and for the lights to get all funky blue. Although not being on stage, you could hear Murphy singing "_she loves me, she loves me not_", in some sort of testing.*10:15 PM*The speakers blasted Bauhaus (and by blasting I really mean they were about to explode. I guess we all figured out that for 10 euros you can't expect a sound with quality) and we started immediately +*Burning from the Inside*+.+*The Line between the Devil's teeth*+ brought the man to the stage. Murphy gave us such a fantastic visuals with all those sensual and nutty dances, and I must say he looked so lovely in that blue velvet coat.At the ending he thanked and greeted us with a warm "_obrigado_" and "welcome".To prove _he came here to be with us_, the third song was +*Disappearing*+. _You can't get a grip on nothing now can you?_ and by the time _there's no love_ Peter grabbed the bass player's ass and gave us a wink. Sure Peter, there's no love /me winks back at you.Right after this song he introduced the drummer, and following another _obrigado_ he said "_I wish I could speak Portuguese but unfortunately I cannot"_.Then he asked for a guitar and delighted us with his +*Marlene Dietrich's favourite poem*+. For sure that night we didn't go home heartbroken. The room was dark and silent. A weak light was standing above Peter Murphy while he was speaking out "_Saw you kiss the King one minute, then the next set sail. Two places in one time, and that's not all_", and as the drummer started playing their plan of +*Gliding like a Whale*+ was quickly unveiled. (Boy was he on speeds, Peter kept jumping around like a psycho rabbit.)Then all of a sudden +*I’ll fall with you knife*+ pierced through... It felt so damn good to listen to that song live, while everybody was singing it in unison...I had the impression that he got out of stage very often, but no – there was this structure above the drummer spot (with some stairs and stuff) so he could get up there and dance a bit more.Again with a "thank you", and this time he introduced the bass player (damn, can't remember his name). The mitic _ah ah ahmm_ female back vocals announced +*The Sweetest Drop*+, and by the time the strophe "_I think about you all day, calling the sacred first, rolling sunlit day, give me what I thirst_" came out Peter Murphy played this amazing role with his shadow (that was projected on the curtains), it seemed two Peters were on stage dancing and teasing with each other. He sure pulled a lot of sexy moves during the guitar solo.Who would've thought we'd be given a triple Bauhaus snack? +*Terror couple killer Colonel*+ followed by +*She's in Parties*+ and +*The Passion of Lovers*+ just kicked us in the butt real hard – it was without a doubt a great time!*11:12 PM*The stage was pretty silent until, for my surprise, Am C D Am guitar chords were played and a calm mellow voice sang "_I hurt myself today..._". At first, the crowd wasn't believing they were actually playing Nine Inch Nails’ +*Hurt*+... some whistle and shouted, but it didn't last for too long, because no one wanted to ruin such beautiful moment. At the end you could see almost everybody standing up and clapping with such vehemence, they'd probably end up with their hands full of sores – not even _I'll Fall with you Knife_ received such applause.+*Huuvola*+, +*Deep Ocean Vast Sea*+ and from his last «Unshattered» +*Idle Flow*+.*11:34 PM* - 1st encoreThey came in again and, while the other guys were settling in, Peter Murphy tore a bunch or roses and threw the petals at the audience. The man behind the microphone and playing the guitar was now wearing a hat... and tore me apart with some +*Strange Kind of Love*+. Like if it hadn't been enough already, they had to play +*Cuts you Up*+. Unfortunately the sound sucked a bit due to the pavilion (the hell with the one who said a sports pavilion is great for musical events). His voice wasn't very clear, the drums and bass smothered everything and the reverb caused a huge headache. Too bad, I really like that song. However, the visuals were very enjoyable – such as seeing Murphy spinning around like some maniac. The poor nut neglected the fact he had a guitar hanging on his back, so by the time he was jumping and aiming his butt to the moon the thing fell off. I’m sure if he wasn't a lucky man he would've had a nasty fall and break his neck. Two more covers came next, The Beatles' +*Tomorrow never knows*+ and Joy Division's +*Dead Souls*+, which brought tears of joy to the fans of JD – another sweet moment where everybody sang along. Then, nothing but a breath taking darkness. A heart beat sound provoked such tension, so as the light bulb Murphy had on his hands that twitched to the sound of the heart beating... +*Your Face*+ had this hypnotic power that surely made my day. After saying "_Thank you, obrigado! Have a beautiful night_" they vanished.*00:08 AM* - 2nd encoreIt took several minutes for them to surface again, but when they finally did, oh boy... Peter came along with a sexy dance, shaking his chest and shoulders to the sound of +*Final Solution*+. Murphy said "_thank you, obrigado_" three times, grabbed his fellows' hands, gave us a gentle bow and then they were gone for good..Didn’t need the cure either, nor a final solution. All I ever wanted was everything, I wanted to be the cream... If only I got some gold, but no... they had to be all greedy, bloody bastards. ;-)At least, I was all warmed up by Peter Murphy so... at the exit I didn’t feel the icy breeze, and it was a sweet guarantee for a good night sleep.

  5. dachmo says Seeing Peter Murphy on a cold night in Portugal sounds fantastic, just the images those words alone conjure up is enough to breed envy amongst myself and I'm sure many others reading this. Did you ever find your friends? how did you get home?

  6. bloodtea says It gets freakin' cold around here... Aww and it's nice to see you're interested in knowing the _rest_ of the story hehe. Well, I didn't find them (it got a lot worse at the exit... 5.000 trying to get out at the same time ain't easy). My aunt had the kindness to pick me up and lend me a bed. But I only got home the next day... woke up late (something past 1pm), had lunch and went to the train station (stupid me, forgot it was saturday and there are less trains... so had to wait for about two hours to get my ride home...sheesh) heh.

  7. dachmo says One of my biggest hang ups is waiting for trains, especially if the never come. Sounds like it was a great concert despite the before and after periods. Great review, thanks for the backstory as well. I like to get the full picture when someone's telling a story.
