The Ethio-jazz of Mulatu Astatke / Broken Flowers

Posted over 4 years ago
Mulato Astatke, an Ethiopian musician and arranger, by mixing jazz and Latin music influences – he acquire while studying abroad in London, NYC and Boston – with Ethiopian music became father of *Ethio-Jazz*.“As a vibraphone, conga and percussion player, he has performed at numerous concerts in Ethiopia and abroad, including appearances at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, Lincoln Center in New York, Beethoven-Haus in Bonn and Barbican Center in London. Mulatu also performed as a guest artist with the Duke Ellington orchestra during its visit to Ethiopia in 1971”Since 2004 he has been collaborating with the Massachusetts-based *Either Orchestra* in Addis Ababa. His most recent performance was in Scandinavia in Summer ’06. (found these videos on youtube with some Mulatu’s stuff: _“Ferruccio Goia”_ and _“Yegelle Tezeta”_)Mulatu Astatke became part of my music library thanks to Jim Jarmusch’s _*Broken Flowers*_, which soundtrack is a brilliant eclectic music combination - _ethio-jazz_ as the main score, mixed with some _garage rock, stoner metal, soul, rocksteady reggae, classical_ and _easy-listening pop music_ –, and I’m entirely grateful for not being kept in the dark ignorant side.01. “There is an End” (The Greenhornes feat. Holly Golightly)02. “Yegelle Tezeta” (Mulatu Astatke)03. “Ride yu Donkey” (The Tennors)04. “I want You” (Marvin Gaye)05. “Yekermo Sew” (Mulatu Astatke)06. “Not if you were the last Dandy on Earth” (Brian Jonestown Massacre)07. “Tell me now so I know” (Holly Golightly)08. “Gubèlyé” (Mulatu Astatke)09. “Dopesmoker” (Sleep)10. “Requiem in _D minor_, _Op._ 48 Pie Jesú (Oxford Camerata – Gabriel Fauré)11. “Ethanopium” (Dengue Fever)12. “Unnatural Habitat” (The Greenhornes)(Yeah, I know this isn’t a memorable video... but it is the song that matters... hope you enjoy anyway)

  2. bloodtea says Thanks... I kinda had some doubts about that: "To post or not to post" _"There is an End"_ pseudovideo... (I posted it since it is also part of _Broken Flowers_ OST, although it might not fit properly here... since this post has its focus on Mulatu Astatke).

  6. Cody B says I came to him from the incredible Ethiopiques series, now up to like 20+ volumes..The history of Ethiopian music is so interesting, mostly because there is no real indigenous music, so when this stuff came out it was just one man's take on jazz, without all the baggage of an indigenous music or a long association with jazz. Cool stuff, and the movie was great too.
