The few songs by African artists that made it into the western pop charts and thus broke the ice with a young audience were often remixes or one-off collabos: Youssou N'dour & Neneh Cherry's 'Seven Seconds' which saw Youssou singing a pop ballad, or Wes' easy house tune 'Alane'. Twelve years after, it's not all sweet Afro-European pop and house that dominates the African music releases on the international market. Interestingly, dusty classics from the modern history of African pop music have regained popularity over the past few years, especially outside of Africa. Meanwhile, on the continent this re-cool-onization of African music has gone largely unnoticed...
