Yoni Gordon and The Goods, Franz Nicolay and Emilyn Brodsky have collaborated on a wonderful cover of one of my favorite songs of all time, “Fairytale of New York” by The Pogues. They are offering up a two song single in exchange for donations to Feeding America. If you have some spare cash, consider the charity. [...]
Each year before posting our top albums of the year, we post albums we missed the previous year. It’s typically an embarrassing admission of indie music oversight and this year is no different. I’m ashamed to call myself a music blogger after looking at this list.1. Henry Clay People – For Cheap Or For Free [...]

Bombadil released Tarpits and Canyonlands via Ramseur Records this year. I compared their sound to a playful blend of Cat Stevens and The Avett Brothers. The band has just released a video for “So Many Ways To Die” featuring various sorts of dumbasses throughout history.Previously posted mp3’s:Bombadil – HoneymoonBombadil – ReasonsVideo: Bombadil – So Many Ways [...]
ATO Records (Other Lives, White Rabbits, Port O’Brien, Alberta Cross, Mike Doughty, Radiohead, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Ben Kweller, on and on…) continues their indie music world domination with the signing of HearYa fav and alt-country cult gods, Drive-By Truckers.DBT has just announced details about their forthcoming album (and tenth of their careers), The Big To-Do. [...]
Foreign Born, purveyors of one of our favorite albums of ‘09 (full list forthcoming), are hitting the road for a small tour including a stop at The Bottle in Chicago. And apparently, Secretly Canadian has paid Foreign Born a massive bonus for being awesome. As you’ll see in the accompanying video, the boys now have [...]
I have Hurricane Rick to thank for meeting Elliott Brood in studio. For the first time in a couple of years, the Mrs. and I found a cast of thousands (babysitters, ex-nanny, mother-in-law, etc. etc.) to cover for us for a getaway to Cabo. The storm emerged and delayed us for one day, which was [...]
The Heavy is shtupping music. If you can listen to this band and not get the urge to have sex with first member of the opposite sex you see, well, you are either a member of the religious right or gay, in which case you should be wanting to have sex with the first member [...]
Congratulations to a HearYa favorite, The Love Language, for recently inking a deal with Merge Records (also home to The Arcade Fire). Look for big things out of them next year when they release their first album on the new label. If you thought the self-titled release (which was recorded on a $300 device bought [...]
During my recent cross country relocation, the advanced copy of Joe Pug’s forthcoming album, Messenger, kept me company and stayed on repeat as I drove through snowstorms in West Kansas. Pug is streaming the title track and “Unsophisticated Heart” (below). The album will be released on February 16th.

My bad for forgetting to post “November Shows We Recommend”, but November was a pretty slow month as it were. And December is shaping up to be somewhat low-key with the exception of New Year’s Eve. Nevertheless, here are some good shows in the Windy City for December. As always, hope to see you braving [...]
HearYa’s own Tom Cruise body double and bearded teen wolf concert goer, SafariMan, spent some time on the phone with J. Tillman. You can buy Tillman’s latest (and great) album Year In The Kingdom now. You can find SafariMan roaming the streets at SxSW 2010.So where are you today? We’re in DC tonight at the 9:30 [...]
We had the pleasure of meeting the guys from Local Natives down at SxSW last year. They couldn’t have been any nicer and we’re happy to announce that they are releasing their debut on Feb. 16 courtesy of Frenchkiss Records. Along with Chief’s debut, this is my most eagerly anticipated debut of 2010.Local Natives – [...]
The Deep Dark Woods can do no wrong. After hearing their new tracks in our live session, I eagerly anticipate any new material they put out. The band sent us an email today with an mp3 attachment for a cover recorded in-studio during the sessions for Winter Hours. For those unfamiliar with The Mississippi Sheiks, the [...]
I reviewed Be Set Free not too long ago and Langhorne Slim and Kemado Records have kindly offered a second free download from the album. For you fellow southerners (still feels odd that I’m in the south now), catch him live with The Avett Brothers:12/31—Asheville Civic Center with the Avett Brothers—Asheville, North Carolina1/1—Fox Theatre with [...]
Sweden’s Shout Out Louds are releasing their third record, Work, on February 23rd via Merge Records. The album was recorded in Seattle and produced by Phil Ek (The Shins, Fleet Foxes, Band of Horses). The first single, “Walls,” was just released for our enjoyment.Shout Out Louds – WallsVideo: Shout Out Louds – Walls
Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon has been tinkering around over the last couple years with his side project, Volcano Choir, and finally released the album a couple months ago. The album, entitled Unmap, is the work of Vernon and fellow Wisconsin band Collections of Colonies of Bees and was released on Jagjaguwar. It’s definitely a tangential departure [...]
