Stain, Afterburn, and Echo / the Aftermyth of Throbbing Gristle

The immersion. A stinging. There is only color. No shape. No front or back, simply orbits rippling back from a central disturbance. Some lighter bodies become vapor rather than resolve into the growing hum that shoots through mass and time. There is a dark room. Two boxes emit a coded spell. The organism opens it's eyes and sees flaming arcs and sparks within the boxes. This is good. No other ...

Birth and Destruction: Rise and Decline of a California Teenage Girl - aka - Rad Chick Eats Sh*t

I'm a huge fan of Pause Edited Cassette Art. To use a famous example, there is an ingenious Captain Beefheart piece (forgive me if I'm remembering Trout Mask incorrectly) "The Dust Blows Forward and the Dust Blows Back" which is poetry that he created by recording each line separately, pausing the tape while he thought of the next one. I used that method 30 years ago as well, and recommend tryi...

Faust in studio, 1971

I put this WDR German TV clip up a couple years ago as a download on Beware of the Blog, but figured I'd repost since I just noticed via Boing Boing that someone had You Tubeized it for easier viewing. Great and rare glimpse at one of the most inventive rock bands ever, in studio.

Nana Kwame Ampadu I and the African Brothers International

From the liner notes: " In short, this beautifully performed and superbly recorded album is a fitting musical excellence from Ghana's longest-lived group. It's therefore not surprising that Nana Ampadu is the most brilliant musician and wonderful lyricist who works in a standard and modern format using traditional rhythms and innovations to give the best to his large audience. Nana Ampadu is a...

Meet Me in Seattle (At The Fair) (1:39)Seattle, 1962: The last successful World's Fair held in the United States is taking place, and organizers need music to spread the word. The call goes out to Joy and the Boys, and Meet Me in Seattle is born. There's a reason why you can't write music that appeals to everyone, unless you're the odd genius who can pen an "Mmm...Bop" or "Macarena." When you t...

Lux and Ivy's Favorites Volume Twelve - The Lux Interior Memorial Edition - Journey into Outer Space (mp3s)

This is the first LAIF with some liner notes (about the music contained herein). I felt a need to at least tell a bit about the songs etc. This is also the first edition with a title other than LAIF and a volume number. This volume, I felt, should always be remembered as the one that “came out” after Lux’s passing. Lux_and_Ivys_Favorites_-_Volume_12.zipWhile most of it was being compiled, i

Serene Roots of Korean Free Jazz

I've been working on a feature length article about Korean free music that should appear this June in Wire magazine and wanted to share some of the bounty for you WFMU folk.  Top left is a solo performance by Kang Tae Hwan.  Kang Tae Hwan was improvising as early as the '70s, one of Korea's first free players.  The only Occidental Kang Tae Hwan release is 2003's Love Time, out on the VHF label.

    God's Kids

What do you get when you cross monotheism with wayout synthesizers and stage mothers? God’s Kids!I’ve been advised by legal counsel that posting more than three of these songs might result in toxic levels of terminal cuteness for which I will be monetarily responsible for. I’m not about to get sued over a God’s Kid. Rather, I’m going to play the celestial bartender that gives you just

An Evolution of Man in Motion (4:17)I've posted previously about the psychedelic flavor of quadraphonic promos, as opposed to the genteel, family-centered tone of many 1950s stereo demos. Here's another example, in the form of a sound-effect montage tracking humankind's ascension from biped to interstellar traveler. This is the opening cut from Ovation's 1973 quad sampler, the rest of which is...

In The Ghetto

Last week, WFMU.org reader Dale questioned my use of the term "ghetto germination station" in my post and I replied that:I'm blogging on behalf of those of us who simply don't have the resources to invest in fancy pots and expensive propagators - cloches are for people who garden for a hobby. Ghetto gardening is the serious business of feeding our families in an economic and social crisis in lo...
