It's been a while so I'm officially giving an explanation for my down time. This past May I moved to San Francisco for a pretty demanding job. Though most non-professional bloggers I know of are also busy as all hell and I've actually been going to more shows than I ever did in Providence or New York, I haven't found the effort to post. It's obvious to me that blogging just isn't a top priority ...

Dirty Projectors - Useful Chamber

Obviously Bitte Orca is a triumph, but I've been swept off my feet by its centerpiece. It's the cornerstone of ethereal vocals that glues the album and spouts its namesake. Every time I listen to Useful Chamber it's rejuvenated and enjoyable. It's wonderful to feel my mind tugged by chords and melodies that have little in common with those of pop and rock, and when the catchy synth line from th...

Double Dragon - To Be A Hero!

Never has something reminiscent of The Final Countdown stole my heart with a swift death punch to the chest a la The Temple of Doom the way Double Dragon's To Be a Hero! did yesterday (unless you include The Final Countdown). Thanks to B for making me listen. With my brain thoroughly blown, I went on to listen to the track, Perdu, and was sadly disappointed. Though the track is fun (my favorite...

New Sheets: M83 - Too Late, Four Tet - Unspoken
6 months ago

Up until yesterday I hadn't been transcribing at all, but something bit me, and I got to notating my favorite M83 song, Too Late. As an added bonus, I finished the piano loop from Four Tet's Unspoken which I now can't stop playing over and over. Both of these are on my sheets page so download and play'em if you're intersted.

Passion Pit - Little Secrets (and me being excited)

This weekend was the warmest of the year by far in Providence (or maybe the whole Northeast). Now everyone is down to one layer, shades, and a smile, and I'm repeating one of Passion Pit's newest bits from their yet-to-be-released album, Manners. Hopefully it won't be long until we can the whole thing's streaming. The three songs I've been able to hear so far offer more danceability but maintain...

Do Make Say Think side projects: Years, The Happiness Project
6 months ago

In my never-ending quest to know everything about my favorite artists, I came across (albeit lately) two side projects from integral members of Do Make Say Think.Charles Spearin recently released The Happiness Project through fellow BSS label, Arts & Crafts. During DMST's last tour, Spearin leant some of his field recordings to their live act--specifically a brilliant intro to the song, Auberge...

Micachu - Just in Case

After listening to the extremely fun and musically tricky Golden Phone I took it upon myself to grab the full album, jewellery, and was subsequently attacked by even more fits of happy. What Micachu does well is violate musical expectations the same way a great pun might point out a spot of absurdity in language. My favorite track so far has been Just in Case. The intense and blustery echos that...

The American Analog Set - The Postman (Styrofoam Remix)

I recently came across a little bit saying that the amanset would be playing SXSW, and this confirms it. They'll be gracing Club Deville on March 20th, and the newly spawned Wooden Birds have a few gigs as well. For those of us who never got a chance to see the amanset before Andrew moved on to different projects, it's an exciting thing. Sadly, I won't be in Austin any time soon so I'll just ha...

West Indian Girl - To Die in LA (Nynex Remix)

I found this in my songs-to-listen pile, and now it won't stop playing for some reason. The main synth riff rings M83 (which of course rings many things decades old), and the constant rock beat holds weight like a stampede. I'm going to have to explore this library which apparently has just as many remixes as original tracks. The 4th on the Floor remixes album is still TBA.West Indian Girl - To...

The Beatles do Rock Band

Last year Harmonix announced that they were in collaboration with Apple Corps to create a unique Beatles game that would involve Rock Band (and Guitar Hero) instruments so it comes as no surprise that they will, in fact, slap the Rock Band logo on the case. In all honesty, I haven't touched these addictive music games since I was in school last May, but this new one might provide a reason to ju...

Giantess - You Were Young

M just got tipped off to Giantess and hence tipped me off to this new electrocandy called You Were Young. It sounds nothing like similarly named effort from Sam's Town, and is much more danceable. Riddled with all the right cliches, it even has the classic, lo pass buildup that was found in so many of my favorite trance songs back in 2001.M's post Giantess - You Were Young.mp3

Faunts - Out on a Limb

So Faunts have gotten catchy. The new LP, Feel.Love.Thinking.Of, finds them venturing away from the moody and lengthy themes of M4 and into territory where I find myself bobbing my head (but I'm not dancing yet). This is most exemplary in my favorite of the tracks, Out on a Limb. Parts of it are driven by almost funky guitar and bass, but then others are left solely to the spacey vocals that con...
