M.I.A. is finally going to follow up Kala! Pitchfork got the scoop from a Pedestrian.tv interview with Diplo and the news goes as follows:Up until now, psychedelic travelers Animal Collective and mushmouthed mixtape MVP Gucci Mane have had exactly two things in common: (1) Both of them sound like they’ve ingested mountains of illicit substances in their lifetimes, and (2) Zomby has remixed both.
Those who fall under the clinical classification of “batshit crazy” might think that tonight’s attempt to contact Michael Jackson’s spirit is a good idea, but for the rest of us, this is prime fodder for scorn and scoff. Direct said scorn at the British cable channel, Sky 1 because they are the ones hosting this debacle and asking psychic Derek Acorah to go into the netherworld with his mi
Hopefully you’re not tired of the non-stop hoopla surrounding Grizzly Bear’s Veckatimest. If you are, you can take yourself into the other room or click away because Grizzly Bear fans get to see a new video right now for the song, “Ready, Able.” It’s done up in claymation, so don’t stress if you get California Raisins flashbacks. It’s not that cutesy though. Check it out.
Jakartah incorporate the strident urgency of hardcore with the precise, whirling architectures of early 2000s Dischord bands. Though they lack the dynamics of the instrumentation, the vocals stand out for their clarity. Jakartah’s need to be understood outweighs the emotional posturing of rage that is too frequent in their contemporaries.Reminds us of: Ian’s Fugazi | a mellower Botch | June o
On Day 3 of Phish Festival 8, Phish played their first full-length acoustic set at, in their words, “the crack of noon.” The early risers and hardcore fans who showed up when the fields opened enjoyed free coffee and doughnuts shaped like 8s. When Trey Anastasio walked out on stage, he asked the fans if they had gotten the doughnuts, which earned enthusiastic cheers in response. As the band se
A couple of weeks ago, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band came home to New Jersey and reconnected with Born To Run, Darkness On The Edge Of Town and Born In The USA, playing them all the way through for their fans. I told you about it then and promises were made around posting the audio. Which I did (here, here and here). And now the Boss wants to raise his NY fans’ giddiness levels up to .
The Dutchess & The Duke make great albums (including this year’s Sunset/Sunrise) and as someone who just saw them for the first time recently, I can tell you they are a great live band as well. So in the spirit of you getting up and getting out to see them, I have tour dates, a lot of tour dates. And for those that don’t know them, I have a song called “Hands.” Check it out and see what yo
Ever seen a zombie reanimate on the dance floor? Love in Stockholm’s Halloween show at the Precinct was a funk-fueled night of the living dead. Love in Stockholm, masquerading as Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band—complete with costumes—was in full force Saturday. Big British shoes to fill you say? Yeah. And Love in Stockholm played the shit out of Sgt. Pepper’s, leaving the crowd scr
As a heads up, some of Sufjan Stevens‘ songs have been mixed with the vocals from a bunch of hip hop heavyweights to make the mixtape, Illinoize. I’m going to give you the little blurb from the website telling you a little more about it, as well as the tracklist and a download link at the bottom. It’s supposed to be good. UPDATE: After having listened to it, I can verify that it is VERY good
On “Heart of Hearts,” vocalist Kevin Peroni tells us that we “know how it’s gonna go.” Each track holds true to this promise, synthesizing decades of pop music into a predictable bricolage. Beautiful, catchy, and well executed but ultimately an appropriate pairing to the empty pop clichés Peroni offers lyrically. Reminds us of: long walks on the beach | the pedagogy of Mary Poppins |
A couple of things. The first is the Passion Pit remix of Max Tundra’s “Which Song.” I’m going to let you go in blank on it, but if you like Passion Pit’s sound, I’m sure you’ll find something in it’s mix that you’ll latch onto. Second is a clip of Passion Pit playing “Little Secrets” at Bonnaroo 2009 from the Bonnaroo 2009 DVD. I was at this show and it was a blast. It seems
Video Games Live is coming to Portland this Saturday and Sunday, and incredibly there are still tickets available. We were at their Seattle performance in January, and will be at the Schnitz this Saturday for their opener in Portland. It promises to be a fantastic show - this video is an intro to the VGL experience.
Thursday night did not get off to a good start. The Phillies were losing, my camera lens was malfunctioning, and Great Scott was uncharacteristically making concert-goers wait outside in the cold for 30 minutes after doors were supposed to open, which, needless to say, was not helping my sore throat and runny nose. I was less than enthusiastic. I was willing to wait and shiver on the corne...
It was easy to reach burnout on Norah Jones fairly quickly. It’s too bad too because she’s very talented, but she was everywhere and that’s hard to take for too long. Some cool news out of her camp today though, as Ryan Adams decided to co-write a song with her. It’s called “Light As A Feather” and you can listen to it here. You can thank NPR for the listen and if you are dying to hear
A sleepy little album that will be pleasing to some, tedious to others. Regardless of one’s fondness for strings and softly spoken lyrics, though, the latest release from Portland’s Ah Holly Fam’ly deserves a listen. There are good things happening here, but it’s safe to say Reservoir isn’t for everyone.Reminds us of: Beirut | Ohioan | Horse FeathersAh Holly Fam’ly: (Website | Myspace)
Let’s start with a quote from Paste Magazine.“The whole premise was such a joke… and I think maybe I took it too seriously. I started to feel like I was becoming a cliché of myself.”That’s Sufjan Stevens on his 50 Albums/50 States project. It’s also Sufjan continuing his More >
It’s November and that means we are getting closer to all those year end best of lists. But I thought while we are waiting, why not post some of the best songs of the year every once in awhile to remind you of how fine they are. First up on my list is The Phenomenal Handclap Band’s “Baby.” It’s a sweet, soul track that maintains that everything is possible with a good woman on your arm.
Pretty Lights (aka Derek Vincent Smith) dropped a new album earlier this year called Passing By Behind Your Eyes. Like Pretty Lights’ other albums, it’s a mix of electro, old soul grooves and vintage hip hop cut up into something that can turn a party out just as well as it can resonate in your headphones. Here’s a song from it called “Sunday School,” featuring a killer sample of Biggie
