For some reason the part of my brain that parses Jared Leto somehow got disconnected from the factoid that Jared is the frontman for 30 Seconds to Mars, so it wasn't until today, when I swung by the London Astoria web site to pick up tickets for a gig I'm hoping to see in May (yes, I am in California, and yes, this is a special gig) that I saw 30STM are playing there in April and, wahey, that's Jared Leto, isn't it?I've wished he'd become a singer since I heard him in his silly band on "My So-Called Life" (The Frozen Embryos, later Between Names). But I've been grooving to 30 Seconds to Mars songs for months on my local "modern rock" station without realizing it was the same hunky actor. Their music is really pretty good. Not great, but it does put Keanu's band to shame. So I scooted over to YouTube to check out their videos and I was massively impressed by the cinematic quality of two of their latest, "From Yesterday," which is kind of an homage to Chinese emperor/martial arts films, and "The Kill," which lifts its plot from "The Shining." I love seeing Jared use both his singing and acting abilities in these clips. They're little mini-films. Enjoy:
