ARETHA FRANKLIN: Hey Now Hey (The Other Side Of The Sky)

Posted about 1 year ago
A re-issue of a 1973 album, HEY NOW HEY finds the Queen of Soul taking her untouchably powerful set of pipes somewhat leftfield of the straight-ahead Atlantic groove formula of the late '60s. This is not to suggest that the record is neither soulful nor funky. On the contrary, it is both. But, from the ambiguous, trippy cover art to the lush, Quincy Jones string arrangements within, it is clear that HEY NOW HEY is also not the usual collection of Franklin singles.
Working closely with Jones, and taking cues from the extended, elaborate, and visionary works of other soul music contemporaries-especially Issac Hayes , Stevie Wonder , and Marvin Gaye-Franklin fuses elements of blues, jazz, and church music, winding the album together with superior production and an almost psychedelic orchestral finesse. Included among the originals are fresh readings of Bobby Womack 's "That's The Way I Feel About You" and "Somewhere" from WEST SIDE STORY. In all, HEY NOW HEY is a unique and noteworthy addition to the Franklin catalogue.
I admit that this is my favorite Aretha album. I have had it since it came out and every time I see it I buy it. It was one of those "vinyl limbo" albums that had it all..except the Aretha that people were used to. Each copy I have had of this tends to be worn more in one place than others. It would be track 9 "Just Right Tonight" . This song is something I would sacrifice much time to perfect but
I guess that is not meant to be...the music is not the hard part...it is getting past her "hair raising...spine tingling" vocals. Judge for yourselves...but do not do as I have and limit this production to the one song. This is a damn good album no matter where you start. Of course this is just my opinion and I would like to hear yours. Please enjoy this reborn once hard to find set...you will be glad you did.

Recorded at The Record Plant , Los Angeles, California in April and August 1972. Originally released on Atlantic (7265). Includes liner notes by David Nathan. (There are no liner notes on SD 7265)
I am looking at the original album with inner sleeve...so there must
be liner notes on the re-issued disc.
