Review: Emeritus - Scarface

Posted over 3 years ago

WTF is Emeritus: An emeritus is "one retired from professional life but permitted to retain as an honorary title the rank of the last office held" (Merriam-Webster)

English Please: Someone who is retired from their job but is still allowed to stick around because they were so good at what they did.

The title of this album lets us know that even though this will be Scarface's last album, he is not leaving Hip Hop music for good just yet. Anyway, lets get to the review.

The production on this album features tracks from the likes of Cool and Dre, Illmind, Nottz, Jake One, and Sha Money XL . Deep bass and slick, simple beats make nearly every song on this album worthy of a head bob. Songs like "It's Not A Game" and "Who Are They" bring out that swagger-rich Dirty South style that Scarface sounds so comfortable rhyming over. While others like, "Can't Get Right", and "Still Here", have smoother, softer production that allows you to hear his lyrics much clearer. An exceptional track production-wise is "Unexpected" , where a flute (of all instruments) makes a simple beat, a standout.

Scarface raps a lot about still being on top after over 17 years in the industry throughout the album, but still retains his edgy gangsta rap lyrics on tracks like "It's Not A Game" , "High Powered" , and "Unexpected" . On "High Note" , the only track (by my count) specifically about women, Scarface tells us how he made a girl well.... hit the high note. Also, a lot of the lyrics on this album are Scarface looking back at his past and re-assuring us that he is still as hard as he used to be.

Aside from a couple of unnecessary weed carriers (Wacko on "We Need You" and "Unexpected" , who the fuck is that?), the selection of featuring artists is pretty good. Lil Wayne and Bun B drop in on "Forgot About Me" . [Sidenote: Is it just me or does Bun B seem like the kinda guy that you definitely wouldn't want to fuck with?] Singers Bilal and Shateish drop dope choruses on "Can't Get Right" and "Still Here" . K-Rino and Slim Thug (where has slim thug been?...who cares.) feature on "Who Are They" and finally The Product [?] and Z-Ro join in on "Soldier Story" . Aside from Lil Wayne and maybe Bun B, there were no huge-name featuring artists on this album but all of them contributed respectfully on each of their songs.

Final Word:

This is a very strong release and a good one to go out on for Scarface. I might even go as far as say this was one of the better releases of year. In my top 20 of '08 without a doubt.

Grade: 83%
