Various Artists: Protected: Massive Samples
Massive Attack is arguable the biggest trip-hop group of all time. Their blending of downtempo, soul, dub, hip hop, and atmospherics have made them a definitive member of any audiophile's record collection. Protected is a no nonsense look at who has influenced and what records Massive Attack has sampled over their years of making music.
The album contains William De Vaughn's "Be Thankful for What You've Got" which Massive Attack covered on their debut album Blue Lines . The album also contains songs from artists like Al Green, James Brown, Isaac Hayes, and Rufus and Chaka Khan.
For Massive Attack fans this is probably a fascinating listen to hear where the band got many of their samples. For non-Massive Attack fans the album has substance to offer as well. The album is filled with soulful, cool, sexy tunes that any music lover can enjoy.
Rating: 7.5/10
