Gun Safety
Just to preface this audio clip. Sometimes, when Stan and I chat, I record. I never know the interesting things he will bring up, or the stories he will tell. I found this when I was going thru some past recordings.
The back story is that Stan loves to play with airsoft guns (basically glorified BB guns, that shoot plastic BB's). Oftentimes, we take him and his friends up to the mountains to shoot each other (eye protection is always required). It just so happened that one night they were around the neighborhood, and a driver called the police department saying there were boys running around with guns. They sent over Sgt. Jill Otaviano, to give the boys a lecture and give 'em a wee scare. Not only is she a police officer, she is also a board member for the non-profit organization that I work for. That's the thing about Alameda...it's a city of 70,000, but most people seem to cross paths, eventually. At the time, she didn't know she was talking to my son, but I contacted her later, to thank her and to let her know that Stan took what she said to heart.
With that being said...here goes nothing...there are things I find so funny about our interaction here...

First. **Coffee In The Pot** is a much better piece of music than it is a concept. ( a terrible waste of two of life's pleasures)
B) It is a dark, exhilerating ride, parenthood. Gun safety is most important. Gun ownership almost as much so.
if that is not like a kid to say..........I dont want to accidentally shoot myself. Being a teacher, that comment made my day. On one hand you have the chance to go and shoot an actual gun, on the other you could shoot yourself. God, kids are awesome.

Gun safety is of major importance in our family.
I said it before they are considered tools in the tool box, respect them as you would a saw or any other thing that could seriously harm you.

Dinner tonight:
C: I'm a Goat
Me: But i put the sign on the door that said "no animals allowed during dinner"
C: It's okay. I'm just a goat who stays in his house.
Me: Okay then, I guess you wont be coming to dinner
C: yeah, I just stay in my house
It was also animated by some of the greatest inflection I've ever seen by a 2 year old, but it was a very interesting response to us trying to get the imaginary (loud) animals away from the dinner table.
Excellent Annie.... I have to echo mollifire's comment, what a nice trip.
That Sony is really sensitive isn't it? You can record some of the softest sounds that are sometimes pretty far off and they sound really clear and close.
As for Gun safety I just was reading about THIS in the paper this morning. Just a warning, it's kind of depressing.

CBW - Record them...when you can...especially when they are young. You will forget all their special phrases and catch words as they get older.
Nick - Yeah...it picks up so much. We record in our den...carpet, couch & paneling. You can hear the thumping at the end, my husband is in the floor above us walking around. Very sensitive. I will read you piece next.

i admit. i have an airsoft gun. i bought it when i was in high school, and used it for a summer. havent touched it since.
It's good that he has a healthy fear of guns AND he's intelligent enough to realize that if a cap gun can do what it did then a real gun could do irreparable damage. That's a very sweet exchange between the two of you too.

Or "Happiness Is a Warm Gun"? Annie, it was great hearing your recording, with a son who actually confides with mother. Congratulations. I've heard of the group Supergrass (or at least their name), but didn't realize that they sound so cool.

i don't really agree with the gun laws in america, but i know how much pride you guys take in them so i won't say anything. it's definitely good that your son has fear and is wary of them.
Amber - When the cap gun went off in the kitchen, he knew he was busted.
Sam - Boys love guns. Sure 'nuff. (not saying you are a boy now, just that you were one once.)

Laura - It's not so much about gun laws (something I struggle with as well), as much as it's owning the fact that most boys are interested in guns. As a parent you have to understand it's healthy for them to have this fascination, and you need to steer them in wise directions.

Great listen, an aspect to parenthood we don't have on this side of the water. Stan sounds like he has his head screwed on with this issue (thanks to a little help from Mom.) Can I ask what you used to record your conversation?

Excellent, annie, thanks for sharing. Really captures Stan well.
Also that recorder is awesome and you mixed it well. I may have to get to capture more of those random moments of the girls' that come and go. Video is OK, but audio-only is so different, better in many ways.
