One Good Turn

Posted over 3 years ago

(I could swear that I MOGged this song before, but Google says I didn't...and, well, it's certainly worth hearing again.)

I'm sure I'm tapping into some fragile place in my childhood when I start adding boxed sets of cartoons to my Netflix queue. I've started watching Rocky and Bullwinkle, Warner Brothers, and "The Muppet Show" all over again, signaling my deep understanding that I could always use a good laugh.

And, frankly, these shows are far more intelligent than most comedy today.

So I desperately needed an episode of "The Muppet Show" last night. During the course of the day, I had paid all of my bills.

Set up a new regular donation to my local Tibetan Buddhist center.

Renewed my lease.

Tinkered with the finances.

Applied to Penn.

Which meant I had to update the resume.

And write a personal statement.

Upgraded my phone and changed my mobile calling plan.

Renewed my prescription.

Fretted a little over repairs to my boyfriend's car -- cos he owes me money.

By the end of the day, I couldn't stop my head from reeling. It took me a while just to realize that it was all worry over two assignments due today and the rather tight cash flow for the month. Well, it took me some time, and one of two mojitos...that came after watching Lena Horne and the Muppets do "Sing a Song."

La la la la la, la la la la la la, la la la la la la la.

I don't know whether it was being able to laugh, or to enjoy something that wasn't so darned complicated, but it doesn't matter when you witness the Swedish Chef's first appearance on the show and he's wrangling with ultra-violent spaghetti. (What did it have against sauce, anyway?) Perhaps it's the fact that imagination is good, and the salve for an overly-analytical brain.

Oh. Well, the spaghetti was provoked.

Today's track is from the Sesame Street album In Harmony. I found a CD copy a few months ago and nearly cried when I heard some of these songs again; and "One Good Turn" by Al Jarreau just has new goodness every time I hear it.

"Rocky & Bullwinkle" - along with Carl Barks' Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge comics, and Jean Shepherd's monologues - are largely responsible for anything in my brain approaching a sense of humor. Just sayin'.

(And hey! Pretty productive day, nicki!)

Yeah, sounds like it was very productive and culminated in a good post/read. Like a genie from a bottle, you put a little energy out there in the world.
