Doc Talk : Amos Lee : Live at the Gothic Theatre
After an impressive debut and being signed to the world-famous Blue Note Record Label , Amos Lee was often, and unfortunately, described as the male Norah Jones. Lee has battled this nickname by putting out a few solid, diverse records and creating a live show that has grown from mid-size clubs to a national tour, selling out venues such as the 999-capacity Gothic Theatre in Denver, CO.
The Gothic Theatre is a nice general admission theatre that features a cascade of balconies ascending three levels before reaching the ceiling. A lovely place to watch a show. Opener Priscilla Ahn displayed an amazing voice that seemed to mesmerize the crowd. After a brief delay, Amos came out and immediately brought the crowd to their feet. Combining his amazing vocal range with songs that touched on jazz, folk, funk and soul Lee delivered. Lee's 100 minute set even featured some light-hearted covers including Queen's Fat Bottom Girls which ended the show with a smile. The set relied heavily upon tracks from the recent Last Days at the Lodge. The crowd sang along and most probably thought, whether seeing Amos for the first time or the fifth, they got what they paid for.
