SXSW 2009 Photo Recap : Starfucker

When you come back from SXSW, everyone asks you the same question : Who did you see that blew your mind and/or do they need to check out. In years past, I've named off about twelve to thriteen bands, never really being able to commit to just one. This year, my resounding answer has been fast and easy : Starfucker. I pretty much overlooked Starfucker's 2008 self-titled debut. It wasn't until early this year, when I was booking MOKB's Official SXSW showcase that I really looked into them. Now I wouldn't go so far as to say Starfucker make the most meaningful music, but their live show is tremendous.

In the laborious process of booking that show, they are the only band that stuck with MOKB from our original six lineup. We lost band after band to larger media outlets, but Starfucker stuck with us. We're pretty stoked to think we made it worth their while. The Radio Room was packed from back to front for their 9pm slot. Just guessing, a line of at least 50 folks still waited outside to gain entry when the band went on. What became immediately evident is that they weren't going to disappoint either. Sporting sweatbands, the group set the example for all to follow : dancing, swirling and flailing about while cold rocking the party. Our new friends from Melophobe were on hand to provide coverage.

Less than a year after their debut, the band will return with a follow-up LP. The record is entitled Jupiter and is considered by the group to be a sister LP to the debut. Many of the album's songs have already gone into heavy rotation in Starfucker's live performances. Jupiter is scheduled to be released on May 5th though Badman Recording Co.
