Doc Talk : Raphael Saadiq is recession proof

Posted 9 months ago

A $30 day of show ticket is nothing to laugh at nowadays, so I was curious to see the turnout to hear one of 2008s best albums. The Bluebird was packed and, as always, looked great inside and out. With no opening act, the band came straight out and introduced Raphael.  He acknowledged the crowd and immediately grabbed his guitar for an instrumental intro. Awesome.  Saadiq continued to run through hit after hit from The Way I See It

Seeing him live with a full band was stellar and the album seems to be full of hit single after hit single - especially when hearing the songs live.  Highlights included Sure Hope You Mean It and Walk Outside

The band also played a Lucy Pearl song that was straight R & B - which the crowd loved.  Saadiq is a true showman whether dancing with his back up singers (on every song!) , chatting with the crowd or displaying his amazing voice.  I expect this band to be one of the highlights of several summer festivals this year with a killer hour set. The album deserved all of the grammy nods it received and I can't wait to see who Rapheal collaborates with over the next 5 years.

Not too long ago, Saadiq also did a cool Keys To The City piece for iMeem. he guides us back to school - his alma mater, Castlemont High. It was there that he met Professor Gregory Cole who basically forced him to play bass in the school's jazz band after Raphael tried to go to Oakland High because "that’s where all the girls went."
