Al Jarreau - We Got By [1975]

The only vocalist in history to net Grammy Awards in three different categories (Jazz, Pop, and R&B, respectively).

The album is the real soul of Al Jarreau. This is the artist, his own songs and his voice, right out of the gate, uninfluenced by success, record label pressure and pop/r&b stardom. Less structured, more melodically varied and definitely more jazz oriented, this is my favorite Jarreau CD. Because it is less commercial, it's sound to me is more timeless and doesn't suffer from sound "dating". This album started his career and even after some 25 years it still sounds very fresh. It is his most jazz oriented album, which makes it stand out.

Al Jarreau - All Fly Home [1978]

This is a superb choice for new jazz listeners due to Jarreau's easy blend of vocals and progressive jazz tracks. It will be a new found jewel for the veteran listeners who may have missed his early music. Try hearing the songs, "All" first then Brite N' Sunny Babe.

Al Jarreau - This Time [1980]

This is a must-have if you're a real Jarreau fan. Wonderful music. The slew of Grammys didn't come until a year or two later when Al came out with "Breaking Away" but "This Time" might have been even better. Each piece is distinctly individual. This is an album for anyone who enjoys great jazz vocals and mesmerizing music.
