Eric Clapton & The Powerhouse (1966)
-
Artist:
Patients, tonight yer ears are going to hear some good time music that stood smack in the middle of the legendary Beano album and Fresh Cream. Eric Clapton & The Powerhouse was a short-lived supergroup glory consisting of: Steve Winwood credited as Steve Anglo (vocals), Paul Jones (harmonica), Jack Bruce (Bass), Pete York (Drums) and the chief instigator of the British blues boom, Eric 'Slowhand' Clapton on six-string. Patients, this was years before Blind Faith-these cuts are some of the earliest recorded collabos between Clapton and Winwood.
Three of four recorded tracks appeared on the early '66 Elektra records sampler What's Shakin' ("Crossroads" (R. Johnson), "Steppin' Out" (J. Bracken) and "I Want to Know" (S. McLeod).) Other artists on the groovy compilation included ditties by The Lovin' Spoonful ("Good Time Music," "Almost Grown," "Don’t Bank On It Baby," and "Searchin'"), Paul Butterfield Blues Band ("Lovin’ Cup," "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl," "Spoonful," "Off The Wall," and "One More Mile"), Al Kooper ("I Can’t Keep From Crying Sometimes") and Tom Rush ("Take A Little Walk With Me").
In an interview with Guitar Player about Powerhouse Clapton said, "We did "Crossroads," a medium-type blues, "Stepping Out" and a slow blues. The slow blues was never issued, so they must have it on tape at Elektra somewhere. It was pretty good, too.
Yer rock 'n roll stethoscopes can chalk Powerhouse up as a dose of some average, but trusty distilled blues rock that fails to meet the energy of Clapton's work with Mayall and falls dangerously short of Cream's intensity. But don't worry patients these tracks ain't no Christmas turkeys-check out the three songs included and don't pass up What's Shakin' if you come across it.
Should You DL? Of course, as your Doctor, I advise you to download your daily dosage of MP3s...
