The Staple Singers 'Soul Folk in Action' (1968)
-
Artist:
Today we have a grippin' long lost folk-gospel classic from "God's greatest hitmakers." It's almost sacrilegious for this album to be outta print.
Patients, you know that the doctors and nursemaids here at the asylum don't like to get too preachy. Hallelujah lawd. But the Staple Singers debut Stax LP, Soul Folk in Action is a blend of perfect medicine-the top of pops outside of their Vee-Jay and Riverside recordings.
In 1968, The Staple Singers were signed to Memphis-based Stax Records. You know, Soulsville U.S.A. It was on their first two Steve Cropper produced Stax albums-Soul Folk in Action and We'll Get Over that they were backed by the soul-slingers from Booker T. & the MGs and the Memphis Horns. Patients, let us be the first to tell you that our rock 'n roll stethoscopes were blindsided by Soul Folk in Action . Amen. Between "We've Got to Get Ourselves Together," "Long Walk to D.C.," "Ghetto," and covers of the Band's "The Weight" and Otis Redding's "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" the snappin' hoofbeats of the church never sounded so groovy. Give a listen when you can and let us know what yer rock 'n roll stethoscopes are thinkin' out there in 115th Dreamland.
Should You DL? Of course, as your Doctor, I advise you to download your daily dosage of MP3s...
