TRICKY - PUPPY TOY
-
Artist:
The third single to be taken from last year’s album Knowle West Boy, Puppy Toy is an odd beast. It starts with a jazzy piano riff, over which Tricky’s gruff mumble arrives, followed by a thoughtful double-bass.It is a lovely start which is then transformed by rock guitar, drumming and some Mariah Carey like vocals. It is like sitting in a smoky jazz club, closing your eyes, soaking up the atmospheric sound only for an overly bombastic rock/ r‘n’b combo to sneak on stage turn the volume up to 11 and blast away the good vibes. It is jarring and seems rather inappropriate. Not that it’s entirely bad, just disappointing given the start.
The second track Numb is an altogether more conventional Tricky song, the sort of thing he could churn out in his sleep. It is a formulaic wander through emotive trip-hop and as such, forgettable.
