The Shirelles Story Planned For Broadway
-
Artist:
With the success of Jersey Boys, it was inevitable that more musical bios would be headed for Broadway. Baby, It's You!, a new musical telling the story of the Shirelles, now looks like its headed to the Great White Way sometime in the spring of next year.
The big news is that Jonathan Sanger has agreed to produce the show. Sanger has worked in Hollywood producing movies such as Vanilla Sky and The Producers. Also on board is Jeffrey Sica of New Jersey's Sica Wealth Management. Once the money men arrive, the next stop is the stage.
The press on the musical talks about a New Jersey housewife who discovered the Shirelles. In fact, Shirley Owens Alston Reeves, Doris Coley Kenner Jackson, Addie "Micki" Harris McPherson, and Beverly Lee had already formed the group in their Passaic High School and had performed at talent contests before they auditioned for a friends mother who also happened to own a small record company. The group went on to score 26 Billboard Hot 100 records including top tens Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow, Dedicated to the One I Love, Mama Said, Baby It's You, Soldier Boy and Foolish Little Girl.
The book for the musical was written by Floyd Mutrux and Colin Escott who wrote the current Presley/Cash/Lewis/Perkins musical Million Dollar Quartet. Mutrux will also direct.
The show previously played a one month run at the Pasadena Playhouse in late-2009.
