Janet Jackson May Take Career Independent

Posted over 1 year ago
Number OnesJanet Jackson is looking into whether she wants to sign with a new label or take her career down the independent route as so many rock stars (but few R&B) have done.

Jackson told the Daily Mirror "All the major labels have called and they want to sit down and talk about me signing. But I need to figure out if that's the route I want to take or if I want to do something more independent. The latter might be better, where I'd be able to call the shots when creating my own album. I haven't decided."

Janet started her career in 1982 by signing with A&M. Nine years later, she moved to Virgin in what was at the time a record breaking deal. In 2007, she signed with Island Records but that deal went south in a short time after the perceived failure of her 2008 album Discipline. The album debuted at number 1 on the Album chart but did not have legs as far as continuing sales and the singles from the LP did not do well.

The entire Island situation left Janet frustrated with the major record companies, coming out and criticizing the label after they pulled support for her European tour to promote the album. That is why she is seriously considering the independent route where she would be able to call all the shots from production to marketing and promoting.

Jackson remains a popular live performer. The question is whether she has the knowledge and resources to rebuild her recording career on her own.
