Kinks and R.E.M. Back in Studio, Simple Minds Want Fans To Take Their Shows With Them, more

Posted 14 days ago
The Kinks are back in the studio recording their first album of new music since 1993's Phobia. Ray Davies told Billboard that he's been working with Mick Avory, the original drummer for the group, and later members Jim Rodford and Ian Gibbons.

Davies said, "I've been in the studio with a couple of the Kinks, actually. "We've got four, five new songs...and I'm just sort of getting them motivated and seeing what they're playing like, because I haven't played with the Kinks for eight or nine years."
Also back in the studio is R.E.M., working on their followup to last year's Accelerate. They are once again working with producer Jacknife Lee who said they will use the same "live in the studio" process as used on the last album.

Simple Minds is working with Germany's Concert Online to offer fans memory sticks of their upcoming shows right after the concert ends. To show the immediacy of the recordings, they won't even have the encores on them, but that's not a problem. As soon as you get home, you plug the stick into your computer and the encores are added over the internet.

Of course, if you don't want to wait in line to buy the memory sticks or you weren't at the concert, you can still buy the recordings at the Concert Online site.

It's been announced that Janet Jackson will open the American Music Awards on November 22 with an eight-minute medley of her hits.

Journeyman bassist Mark Smith, who has played with Roxy Music, Bryan Ferry, Van Morrison, Joe Cocker and George Michael among others, died back on November 2. His body was found in his apartment after he didn't show up for a show. No cause of death has been announced. Smith was 49.

Michael Jackson's This is It has passed the $200 million dollar mark worldwide. The film has pulled in $61 million in the U.S. and another $140 million in the rest of the world.
