The disco explosion of the 70's brought the 12" single, one song per side on a full size piece of vinyl. The wider spacing of the grooves allowed club DJ's to play the tracks loudly with a greater dynamic range and without creating a great deal of distortion. The format also allowed the DJ's to find specific passages of music and cue up the records much easier.

A side advantage of the format is that the 12" singles brought about the release of new and lengthier versions of regular dance hits, sometimes extending songs from three minute radio versions to ten minutes or more. As disco died and rap and hip-hop took over in the clubs, the 12" single became more and more important for the DJs in bands and venues.

Rhino U.K. has assembled 32 of these 12" club anthems onto 3-CDs on 12" Dance: The Definitive Collection. The first CD of the set starts with the big disco themes and early examples of Rap from the Sugarhill Gang. The second disc moves into the 80's with the rise of Pop, Rap and Techno/House while the final CD covers 1990 to 1995 when artists like Deelite, C&C Music Factory and Jamiroquai were burning up the charts.
