Bowie to Give Space Oddity the Deluxe Treatment for 40th Anniversary

David Bowie's 1969 album, Space Oddity, will be given the deluxe treatment on October 12 when it is released in a 40th anniversary 2-CD set.

Originally titled Man of Words/Man of Music in the U.S. (it was reissued as Space Oddity in 1972), the album marked the first of many changes for Bowie as he let go of his mod and pop leanings and took on progressive folk. The album went largely unnoticed in the U.S. upon its first release, but in the U.K., the single of the title track went to number 5 in September of 1969. The reissue of the album in the U.S. in 1973 worked its way up to 16 while the single made the top 15. Two years later, the single went to the top of the British charts.

For an album by a relative newcomer, Space Oddity used great session musicians like Herbie Flowers, Rick Wakeman, Terry Cox, Tim Renwick, Paul Buckmaster and John Lodge. Production was by Tony Visconti on every track except Space Oddity, which was produced by Gus Dudgeon after Visconti wrote it off as a novelty record.

The new edition of the album includes 15 bonus tracks of mostly unreleased demos, stereo mixes and alternative versions. Not only will it see digital and CD versions, but will also be released on 180 gram vinyl.
