WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Sheila E. Speaks to Congress, Nancy Sinatra Writes on Performance Royalties, more

Posted 5 months ago
Sheila E spoke at today's hearings in congress on Performance Royalties being paid by regular radio stations. She stated, "Music is my life, and it's not fair - it's not fair what's happening... What I ask of you today is to ensure that the next generation of musicians will enjoy the respect they deserve by getting compensated by the companies that profit from their works."

Meanwhile, Nancy Sinatra wrote an op-ed in today's New York Times berating the stations for not delivering on their promise of "free publicity."
Radio station owners argue that artists receive free promotion from airplay of their records. This is simply untrue. Most of the music played on AM and FM radio is at least two years old. And the practice of “backselling” — mentioning the name and performer of the song that was just played — has fallen into such disuse that a decade ago the nation’s largest radio station operator, Clear Channel, asked for $24,000 per title to mention the song’s artists on the air. It’s no surprise that companies unwilling to even recognize artists on the air would also be averse to paying performance royalties.

Nick Cave and Warren Ellis are releasing the double-disc set, White Lunar, on September 22 via Mute Records. The album features music for films and documentaries that each has written, including The Assassination of Jesse James, The Road, and The English Surgeon.

Terry Thornton, spokeswoman for the Office of Public Safety and Employee Communications at the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, says that there has been no contact between Charles Manson and Phil Spector. The often reported story (including us) prompted an internal investigation that proved that the two inmates, housed at separate facilities, had never had contact through notes passed by a guard.

Country session string player Byron Bach passed away July 28 at the age of 86. He played on Ray Price's Nightlife, Lynn Anderson's Rose Garden, Kenny Rogers' She Believes in Me and many other country hits. He also played on pop hits like Rocky by Austin Roberts, Everlasting Love by Carl Carlton and Bob Dylan's Self Portrait album.
