Bee Gees Mine Their Catalog for Not One, But Two Hits Collections

The Bee Gees are celebrating their 50th anniversary by releasing two multi-disc hit collections.
This is territory that has been well mined in the past by the group. In recent years they have not only released a special edition of the early-80's Greatest Hits set, but also another 2-CD hits collection, the Number Ones album and the One Night Only live album that covered much of the same territory.
The first of the new sets, Mythology, is a 4-CD/81 track collection that was curated and produced by the two surviving Gibb brothers, Barry and Robin. This time around, each of the discs is made up of songs chosen by Barry, Robin, Maurice's widow Yvonne and Andy's daughter Peta. Barry explained in the liner notes, "These are pretty much our personal favorites. This is now the Bee Gees 50th Anniversary. And by the Bee Gees I mean all four brothers."
One of the differences in this package is that there are a number of rarely reissued tracks along with the debut of two new Maurice Gibb songs, Angel of Mercy and The Bridge. Of course, the entire fourth disc is new for a Bee Gees collection, featuring brother Andy's biggest hits along with the previously unreleased Arrow Through the Heart.
Also included in the package is a scrapbook of family photos, many never-before published, along with tributes from artists such as George Martin, Brian Wilson, Elton John, Graham Nash and the band's longtime manager Robert Stigwood.
The second set is Ultimate Bee Gees: The 50th Anniversary Collection (Deluxe Edition). This 2-CD set is a straight best of set that has been enhanced with some of their later European hits. Included is a medley of songs that they wrote but were hits for others.
Also included in the package is a DVD of unreleased videos that include TV appearances, live performances and promo videos.
