Soul Train Coming to DVD

Variety is reporting that Direct Holdings Americas, the parent company of Time-Life Records, has acquired the entire DVD distribution rights to the Soul Train series along with a number of concerts by artists like Al Green and the Temptations and the Soul Train Music Awards. The vast majority of the programs in the deal are being licensed for the first time.

Whether the material will be sold as compilations of various artists via the Time-Life catalog and on TV or as artist specific discs is unknown. Speculation is that there will be an initial move towards releasing a Michael Jackson set as there is much material from both the series and from the Music Awards shows.

Their archives are incredibly rich and deep and reflect a vibrant part of pop culture that no other show could capture or has been able to replicate ever since.”
