Jefferson Airplane Take You Back to Winterland One More Time

Posted 5 months ago

Iconoclassic Records will release an expanded version of the Jefferson Airplane's last album, Thirty Seconds Over Winterland, on July 21. The album documents the group's last shows at San Francisco's Winterland on September 21 and 22, 1972.

According to Jeff Tamarkin's liner notes, "during the last few years the core leadership had irrevocably split into factions: rhythm guitarist/vocalist Paul Kantner and singer Grace Slick on one side and lead guitarist/vocalist Jorma Kaukonen and bassist Jack Casady on the other. They'd always been a band of misfits whose temperaments were as dissimilar as their musical contributions, but those same tensions that had torn them asunder had also served to fuel their creative juices. By the fall of 1972, the two cliques were barely speaking to one another, but Jefferson Airplane remained one of rock's great live entities."

Also part of the lineup at the time were Papa John Creach, David Freiberg (Quicksilver Messenger Service) and Johnny Barbata (the Turtles). The shows concentrate heavily on the Airplane's later albums (Bark and Long John Silver) along with a bit from the Hot Tuna catalog. The original 1973 issue of the album peaked at number 52 on the Album chart.

The original seven songs are included along with five bonus tracks, newly mastered by Grammy Award-winning engineer Vic Anesini from the original master tapes.

The track list:

  • Original Album Tracks
    • Have You Seen The Saucers
    • Feel So Good
    • Crown Of Creation
    • When The Earth Moves Again
    • Milk Train
    • Trial By Fire
    • Twilight Double Leader
  • Bonus Tracks
    • Wooden Ships
    • Long John Silver
    • Come Back Baby
    • Lawman
    • Diana/Volunteers
