Ponderosa Stomp Coming to New York City

Posted 5 months ago
A New Orleans tradition is coming to the Lincoln Center in New York City. Every year, the Ponderosa Stomp brings some of the greats of American Roots music together for a two-night celebration. Featuring artists like Otis Clay, Dale Hawkins, Carl Mann, Wanda Jackson and ? and the Mysterians, the festival covers everything from roots-rock to blues to country and more.

The spirit of the annual stomp comes to Lincoln Center on July 16, 17 and 19 with, per the venue site:
...a special three night collaboration between Lincoln Center Festival and Midsummer Night Swing that follows the mission of the Stomp, showcasing living history and thriving art, exposing new talent, reviving careers, and praising the unsung heroes who planted the very roots of American music.
Festivities start on July 16 at Damrosch Park with The Get Down: Soul and R&B featuring William Bell (Tryin' to Love Two), Harvey Scales (from the Esquires and writer of Disco Lady), the Bobbettes (Mr. Lee) and backing by the Bo-Keys. Dance lessons will be held at 6:30 followed by the music at 7:30.

The next night is the Best Dance in Town: Rockabilly, once again at Damrosch Park, featuring the Collins Kids, Carl Mann (Mona Lisa) and Joe Clay with backing by Deke Dickerson and the Eccofonics. Once again, you can learn all the moves at 6:30 with music at 7:30.

The big night is July 19 when the Stomp comes to Lincoln Center with a Tribute to Wardell Quezergue. Known as the "Creole Beethoven," Quezergue arranged some of R&B's most memorable and eduring songs including Iko Iko, Chappel of Love (both by the Dixie Cups), Barefootin' (Robert Parker), Mr. Big Stuff (Jean Knight) and Groove Me (King Floyd).

Saluting Quezergue are many of the artists with which he has worked and a couple of newer ones from the genre, including:
  • Dr. John
  • Dixie Cups
  • Robert Parker
  • Jean Knight
  • Dorothy Moore
  • Tammy Lynn
  • Tony Owens
  • Zigaboo Modeliste
  • Michael Hurtt
Plus, an appearance by Wardell Quezergue's Rhythm & Blues Orchestra in a rare New York appearance.
