SOUNDS OF FUTURE PAST AND PRESENT PERFECT

A wonderful, secret garden

Posted 9 months ago

It is hardly a secret: the Irish-Norwegian duo Secret Garden's debut album Songs from a Secret Garden (1995) is marvelous . I have been playing it frequently for over 14 years, and still is sounds great. Rolf Lovland's delicate melodies (like the 1995 Eurosong winner Nocturne ), and Fionuala Sherry's violin make this into an unforgettable album. All the songs on the album are super short, the longest being only 3min35sec. But none of them feel too short. I must also mention the impressive arrangement, which is as good as it gets. It is an example of how great the combination of real classical instruments and synths is.

Secret Garden has released several fine albums since the debut, like Once in a Red Moon (2002), where the song You Raise Me Up originally came from (which has been covered more than 125 times, most famously by Josh Groban). But from a new age music perspective (and not pop), the first three album are best. Here the garden is still mystical and like a well-kept secret.
