40 Years Of Music Stars On Sesame Street

Posted 16 days ago

Sesame Street premiered on November 10th, 1969, and over the last 40 years some of our favorite musicians have stopped by to make music for the kids. I just took a YouTube journey and pulled up these videos which were all entertaining for one reason or another. I was always more of a "Reading Rainbow" man myself, but when it comes to star power... Sesame Street has the game locked down.

Stevie Wonder - Superstition Live On Sesame Street - Unlike the rest of the videos you'll see here, Stevie Wonder didn't make up a new cute song and sing it with the puppets. In fact he didn't talk to anyone... he just delivered a kick ass performance of "Superstition". The only reason you can tell this is from Sesame Street is because there are random kids on the set watching the performance.

Feist 1, 2, 3, 4 (Sesame Street Version) - I thought I hated Feists "1,2,3,4" song after Apple put it in an iPod commercial that played every 5 minutes... but then she visited Sesame Street and turned it into the cutest thing you've ever heard in your life.

Ray Charles Alphabet Song - Out of the hundreds (seriously) Sesame Street alphabet songs you can find, the Ray Charles version is one of the best.

LL Cool J Addition Expedition - You thought LL Cool J looked soft in his music videos where he's kissing up to the ladies? Check him out giving Elmo a big ole hug and cheesing at the end of this.

Michael Jackson & Oscar The Grouch - Surprisingly... no singing involved. My heart broke a little.

B.B. King sings about ..... wait for it.... THE LETTER B

Ray Charles' Alphabet Song is on a cd somewhere....its the only version my granddaughter recognizes, refusing to sing it the "boring" way.

You know, I got the great opportunity to play a show with a band that did all Sesame Street music, and so I had to really listen to and learn a bunch of Sesame street tunes very closely. There is so much great musical material there, and most of it has Jim Henson's mark, in selecting, producing, and sometimes composing. The newer Muppet movies after Jim Henson just aren't the same, because the music is usually just covers of old pop tunes. I don't think he gets enough props for that.

I'm on a train so I'll save the streaming for later (ah the anticipation!) but I'm a big fan of Animal vs. Buddy Rich. Animal wins of course.

    Good aniversary!

Excellent video choices. Stevie Wonder is phenomenal - what a performance. But you could say that about all these choices. I Particularly liked Ray and BB.

Excellent post here! Another video worth sharing is "Furry, Happy Monsters," which is R.E.M.'s version of "Shiny, Happy People" for the SESAME STREET crowd. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7_xzAWLv-g
