So i've just returned from my visit to Uppsala Reggae Festival (i know, where, what? - it's a small town in Sweden, that was dubbed the 'reggae mecca of Scandinavia' - a pretty hard title to win, no? ). But they managed to draw in the likes of Alborosie, Morgan Heritage, Richie Spice, Lee Perry, Burning Spear, Junior Reid, Burro Banton, Beenie Man, Luciano, Sean Paul and loads more. It was TUFF!
Lee Perry had his classically ridiculous outfit on, with incense sticks poking out of his hat. Richie Spice was a highlight, and I'm still stumped by Morgan Heritage's insanely talented family, I'm suspicious they might have been spawned out of some kind of IVF which produced a whole band. But Beenie Man was the top of the top for me, a great performer, not like Sean Paul, who was a little bit diva-like and had a lacky running around after him doing his audience revving for him. He managed to get himself arrested too on suspicion of marijuana possession. The ever-blazing SeanadaPaul? No...never.(yeah i know, that song is about love, whatevs). I tell you though it ain't exactly sweeden...despite the supposed 300 arrests it was surprisingly herb free. Babylon dem teef my herb...
I have never seen so many blonde dreads in my life, or red/green/yellow coloured outfits, the best one i saw was this older lady, tucking into her chicken, rice and pea (could this be a glimpse of my future? haha):
What a legend. Here are some highlights that I heard over the few rainy days:
Morgan Heritage - Jah Jah City
Alborosie - Herbalist
Beenie Man - Back it up
