MGMT is what happens when Mick Jagger has sex with the ghost of the 1980's (who is one sassy vixen, I might add). Songs like "The Youth," "Pieces of What," and "Weekend Wars" have a 1970's Rolling Stones/Bowie vibe to them, yet they have been singed with 80's electro and synthesizer. "Weekend Wars," for example, begins with simple chord arpeggios, but shortly after the middle of the song, Pac-Man joins the band and starts free-styling in blips, which is always a good thing. "The Youth" simply sounds like a dream, with a hypnotic chorus that would be the soundtrack to astronauts waltzing in space. When "Ooh, girl. Shock me like an electric eel/Baby girl, turn me on with your feel" is sung on "Electric Feel," the album shows its 80's undertones and brings the sex in full force. This is the song that robots sing when they realize they can make love for the first time, especially with the sensual synth that is glazed over the track. "Kids" and "Time to Pretend" carry on in this 80's dance vein with a guitar/synth that sounds so full and chunky, I can classify these tracks as "heavy."
Lyrically, MGMT excels, as their word choice is mystical and never too obvious. "Time to Pretend," for instance appears to be about those who rise to fame, yet in the process, slowly begin to self-destruct. "Fated to pretend," or to live a dream lifestyle, the famous inadvertently set themselves up to "live fast and die young." While the lyrics of "Time to Pretend" are fairly easy to figure out, other tracks, such as "Weekend Wars," are near impossible - "Instant battle plans written on the sidewalk/Mental mystics in a twisted metal car/Tried to amplify the sound of love and light." This song is either about a post-apocalyptic war or (according to a band) when those in a relationship fight on the weekend. Whatever the meaning may be, the lyrics are evocative and fresh. It's time to listen to MGMT. Get down and funky with your bad self during their electro-80's-rockers or play mini-golf with Ziggy Stardust on their electro-70's-space tunes.
