The Black Keys and ZZ Top's Billy F. Gibbons are teaming-up in Los Angeles over the weekend for a songwriting session to develop material for ZZ Top's forthcoming album.

The duo are headed for LA this weekend to meet with Gibbons and producer Rick Rubin and try to write songs for the album, which is being produced by Rubin , reports Billboard .

Black Keys frontman Dan Auerbach spoke to Billboard about the collaboration.

"Billy came to our show in Columbus, Ohio, and played us some new songs, but this will be the first time we've gotten together in a musical way," said Auerbach .

We previously told you about the planned collaboration back in August, in which Rubin 's revealed to Billboard that their was already some new material which came off a 15-day studio session he did in May.

what a weird combo.  i love that ZZ Top is still movin and shakin'.  The one dude had a pretty cool role on the tv show Bones last season, as Angela's dad...

Awesome news. Any producer other than Rubin may steer this collaboration into the cheese pot - can't wait to hear it. Could legitimize ZZ Top after 20 years of less-than-great stuff.

I can't wait to hear something from this. I really liked the early bluesier Black Keys stuff (not the the last album was bad, it just wasn't as bluesy) and ZZ Top's first 10 years were almost equally based on the blues so that's a good start. Rick Rubin's productions can be pretty good although I didn't like the Dixie Chicks album he did as I felt that was overblown but I guess he's getting a bit sick of always stripping the sound back after Johnny Cash & Neil Diamond. My hope is a return to early ZZ Top/Black Keys songwriting with a simple production like the Cash/Diamond stuff... mind you ZZ Top with a good horn section could be interesting as long as they don't get in the way of the Willie G's guitar...
