Grammy Winning Blues Legend, KOKO TAYLOR, Dead at 80 in Chicago

MUSIC NEWS - MNN is saddened to report that Chicago blues legend, KOKO TAYLOR has died ftoday rom complications after surgery to correct gastrointestinal bleeding. The surgery was performed on May 19 at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, IL. Bruce Iglauer of Alligator Records, her Chicago-based label since the early 1970s, reported her death today. Ms. Taylor had most recently performed on May 7 at the Blues Music Awards ceremony in Memphis, TN. At the event, she received her 29th Blues Music Award (formerly the W.C. Handys), more than any other artist. Ms Taylor was born on September 28, 1928 Cora Walton near Memphis, TN and died this afternoon (June 3, 2009). She is survived by her husband, Hays Harris; daughter Joyce Threatt; son-in-law Lee Threatt, grandchildren Lee, Jr. and Wendy, and three great-grandchildren.

As a member of the Lonnie Brooks Blues Band, I've had the pleasure of sharing the stage with Koko on numerous occasions. She was one of the best ever, and I'll miss her tremendously.
