WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

This Week's Live Picks

Monday: Fanfarlo + Wildbirds & Peacedrums @ Bowery Ballroom 7pm $12 [tix]
I've had lots of people telling me I should check out Fanfarlo for months now and I have to admit I haven't listened to those people or the band yet. I guess now would be as good a time as ever as the band hits New York for a couple of shows this week. They've already gotten big enough that this show had to be moved from Mercury Lounge to the Bowery Ballroom, so I guess I'll just be bandwagon hopping here.
Fanfarlo - "I'm A Pilot"
Wildbirds & Peacedrums - "There Is No Light"

Tuesday: Sunn O))), Pelican, + Earth @ Brooklyn Masonic Temple 8pm $25 [tix]
If you're looking to destroy your eardrums tonight look no further then the evening with Southern Lord. Featuring three of the label's heaviest hitters this is going to be one of those unbelievable evenings where you see some of the best bands a genre has to offer. All three of these should be on regular rotation if you like metal even a little bit.
Sunn O))) - "B-Witch"
Pelican - "An Inch Above Sand"
Earth - "Hung from the Moon"

Wednesday: Yeah Yeah Yeahs @ Radio City Music Hall 8pm $30 [tix]
Having spent the summer playing just about every big festival, it'll be nice to see the Yeah Yeah Yeahs in a more intimate venue. Yes, this band has reached the point where the biggest auditorium in New York City equates to intimate. The fantastic sound of Radio City should translate well for the band and you know they'll put on a great show since it's their hometown.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - "Runaway"

Thursday: Japandroids @ Mercury Lounge 9:30pm $10 [tix]
Despite already having announced appearances during the CMJ Music Marathon, Japandroids managed to sell out their Sunday show at Mercury Lounge. Luckily the band added a show Thursday night and tickets are still available for that one. You really do need to check out this band more then once.
Japandroids - "I Quit Girls"

Friday: Yo La Tengo + Black Lips @ Roseland Ballroom 8pm $30 [tix]
You can still win tickets to this show by entering right here, but if you don't want to take any chances of missing this one then you better get your tickets now. Obviously you should know what you're getting from Yo La Tengo this year, but with no Hanukkah shows this year you should also know this is your last chance to see them in New York this year.
Yo La Tengo - "Nothing To Hide"
Black Lips - "Drugs"

Saturday: Phoenix + Passion Pit @ Central Park Summerstage 6pm $32 [tix]
This weekend the makers of two of the best records of the year will be sharing the stage at Central Park for two fantastic shows. Friday and Saturday evening we get Phoenix and Passion Pit doing their thing on the same stage. This seems like such a brilliant pairing of bands that I can't believe it hasn't happened before. Get your tickets now as it's getting close to selling out both shows.
Phoenix - "1901"
Passion Pit - "Moth's Wing"

Sunday: Sunny Day Real Estate @ Terminal 5 7pm $30 [tix]
With all the talk lately centering around the Pavement reunion, it's good that we don't have to wait a whole year to see another reunion. The godfathers of emo, Sunny Day Real Estate, have returned and will be playing the expansive Terminal 5. Having never seen Sunny Day Real Estate I'm not exactly sure what to expect but I'm sure there will be lots of emo kids to help you through it if it's your first time too.
Sunny Day Real Estate - "In Circles"
