Top 10: Potential ATP Curators
-
Artist:
Having spent last weekend soaking up all that All Tomorrow's Parties has to offer, I realized that there is really no other festival in the world quite like it. It's a community formed in a weekend for the sole purpose of listening to some great music, and it's an amazing experience. Listening to Wayne Coyne blabber on and on about how thankful he was to get a chance to curate the event you realize how special it is to do that. So with both thoughts in mind I present to you my Top 10 list of potential curators. None have ever curated before but I think they all fit well within the history of ATP.Who would you want to see curate? Who would you hate to see curate? Let me know in the comments.
10. Arcade Fire; They seem like an obvious choice, over the last 5+ years they have taken indie rock to a new plain of existence - hitting the Billboard charts and really making a splash as the world of independent music has grown around them. They have a span of influence, they can sellout a huge room on their own, and they have some really good friends in the music world. Maybe they could even get Unicorns to reform for a weekend!
Arcade Fire - "Wake Up"
9. Todd P; For the past few years, Todd P's underground rock shows have helped define the New York music scene. It seems every band he books becomes the next big thing and no matter how many times the cops come knocking he keeps putting on the best shows with the most desired names. What if he got to do it on a grander scale? Who would he draw in then? Would there be the huge bands that helped define his taste, or would it be a series of bands that prefer to play from the floor rather then the stage? Either way it would be fun to find out.
Matt & Kim - "Daylight"
8. TV on the Radio; They may have just decided to take some time off to focus on their side projects, but maybe that would also give them the time to reach out to all their cool friends for one of these fests. Think about it Sitek could cycle through his Rolodex, trot out the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Liars, The Strokes, and then you could do all the side projects from the band members rounded out by a headlining performance from TV on the Radio! Sounds like an awesome day of rock to me, especially for the New York version.
TV on the Radio - "Poppy"
7. The Streets; Obviously if you're going to look at potential curators you're gonna have to get some big English star to curate the one of the multiple ATP's in England, so what about an abrasive star like Mike Skinner. He could go and book some crazy acts that don't quite fit in, get a lot of hip hoppers maybe, or just take over the stage and freestyle for 12-hours. Your choice.
The Streets - "Turn the Page"
6. Jonny Greenwood; It is way too obvious to just put Radiohead on here. Obviously ATP would love to have them curate a festival but they may be a little too big to keep the intimate nature of the festival together. So what if we just asked the one that should have had an Academy Award nomination to his name? Yeah, Jonny Greenwood has proven he has fantastic taste in music and he is a famous British musician. Seems to make sense to me.
Jonny Greenwood - "Open Spaces"
5. Frank Black; Whatever he's being called these days, Frank Black is a legendary musician. ATP have already allowed Kim and her sister to curate one of these, so you know it has to eat up the guy known as Black Francis that he hasn't been asked yet. Let's throw him a bone, all three of his bands can play and everyone can go home happy.
Frank Black - "Headache"
4. James Murphy; As LCD Soundsystem, James Murphy has release two of the best records of the last 10-years. As co-founder of DFA Records he has helped define the world of music for the last 10-years. His legacy is unquestioned and he would bring some fantastic bands up to Kutsher's with him. Make him an offer now ATP, that is unless you'd rather have one of the next three.
LCD Soundsystem - "New York I Love You, But You're Bringing Me Down"
3. Rick Rubin; Here is a brief list of bands Rick Rubin has helped turn into star; Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Run D.M.C., Jay-Z, The Dixie Chicks, and so many more. Now imagine him calling up all the bands he's worked with or wants to work with and cramming them into the Stardust Ballroom. Yeah, I think that's any music geeks wet dream right there.
Jay-Z - "99 Problems"
2. R.E.M.; They're probably too big to curate and play an ATP, but since another Warner Bros. signee did so this year I thought I'd throw it out there. First off, you know you would want to see them in a place way smaller then they normally play. Beyond that they come from Athens, Georgia, one of the great hotbeds of independent music talent for years. Imagine the names they could draw out of hiding just by a call from Michael Stipe. Yeah, it would be a good one.
R.E.M. - "Finest Worksong"
1. Pavement; The big news as the weekend drew to a close were the swirling rumors that Pavement would be reuniting for 2010. Now that the rumors have been somewhat substantiated it comes down to where are they going to reunite? Will it be Coachella, where so many big bands have gone to resurface? Will it be this rumored Summerstage show? Or will it be to curate the third day of ATP NY '10? My money and my hope is on the last one.
Pavement - "Harness Your Hopes"
