VA: Confessing Deep Soul From New Orleans
-
Artist:
Until Quite Recently soul has been the poor relation in New Orleans' uniquely rich musical heritage. As the cradle of jazz, the city's pre-war black musical heritage has been extremely well documented, and post-war the rock 'n' roll of Fats Domino, Little Richard and others is rightly considered amongst the best of the genre. The catchy good-time R&B that Allen Toussaint and Harold Batiste largely directed at the start of the '60s for labels such as AFO, Minit and Instant had an enormous influence on the development of southern soul, but the actual Crescent City discs from the golden age of soul have tended to be overlooked.
Many of the artists featured here - Earl King and Ernie K-Doe are obvious examples - had their roots in the earlier sounds and this album shows just how well they were able to make the transition to more over gospel vocals stylings. Other, such as Tony Owens and Richard Caiton, only ever recorded as soul singers. But, whatever their history, all put their heart and soul into the songs, pouring out their emotions in a manner that is the hallmark of the heaviest, deepest form of black music.
A selection of 20 quality crysoul ballads from the Crescent City of New Orleans. This will appeal to all those who bought Grapevine's earlier best selling deepsoul compilation 'Troubled Waters' (which featured tracks cut at Malaco, just up the road in Jackson Ms.)
This is Deep Soul at its peak.
