MUSIC CHATTER AND MATTER

In Memory of Aaliyah

Posted about 1 year ago

This monday, August 25th, marked the 7th anniversary of the death of Aaliyah. Aaliyah was a triple threat (I loved her in Queen of the Damned) and destined for great things. Some might call her Timbaland's muse because what was just an over-produced track on its own, somehow became magic when she laid down her soft soprano. Although it seems like Timbo's been looking for a replacement ever since (no disrespect to Keri Hilson), those of us who were true fans know that there will never be another. Yes Ciara, I'm talking to you. I can't help but wonder, had she never taken that flight, where would she be today? Would she be ruling the music charts, racking up film roles or both? Would we even care about Ciara, Rihanna or even Beyonce?

As trite as it sounds, the day she died it was if time stood still. I remember where I was and what I was doing when I heard the news. I was a pretty big fan and was deeply saddened by this. But of course, my pain was nothing compared to the family. Quick story - shortly after she passed I was asked to clear her music for a tribute segment on a dvd by a record label (who shall remain nameless). This meant I was on the phone with her manager, who was also her uncle, trying to negotiate with him in the middle of his grieving process. The man had just buried his niece and my job is to offer him money to make him agree to terms. Needless to say, I felt like a complete jerk and as you can probably guess, he denied our use.

7 years later, Aaliyah Dana Haughton is still greatly missed. Let's all take a moment and reminisce.

Love this post. That sounds pretty rough having to be that dude who is calling to talk business during such a loss. I have been spinning her album all summer.
