Rodney Jerkins Calls Janet Jackson "His Sister," Spills More Details on Her Next Album

Artist:
Producer Rodney Jerkins aka DarkChild continues to drop clues on what we can expect out of Janet Jackson's upcoming 11th studio album. Jerkins, who has admired Jackson for years, told MTV News that he's always been a fan of her music and what she's created with long-time producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and that they "musically connect."
So what can we expect out of the Jackson/DarkChild collaboration? According to Jerkins, "an emotionally driven album." He goes on to tell MTV News that, "the studio has become a second home for her because with the whole situation with Michael [Jackson] happening, and I feel like right now, emotionally, she can come here and let all her feelings out. I got her writing again — she has the pen and the pad in her hand."
Aside from the recent passing of her brother MJ, Jackson has had some other life drama that's helped fuel the creative process such as her break-up with long-time producer Jermain Dupri and self-esteem issues that have had a lingering effect on the singer for years. With Jerkin's persuasion, Jackson is ready to put it all out there for the world to hear. But don't expect a heavy ballad focused piece, rather, Jackson is sticking to her trademark formula of balancing dance with mid-tempo tracks inspired by worldwide influences, from African rhythms to Brazilian and Latin music.
It's no secret that I've been a massive Janet Jackson fan for years. However, I can honestly admit her work has fallen off tremendously since All For You (2001), though I'd even argue since Velvet Rope era (1997). It's encouraging, as a fan, to hear that Jackson has a pen in her hand again -- the personal touch is what's been missing on her last few album attempts. A release date has not been announced for the yet-untitled 11th studio album, but we'll keep you posted on any news. While you wait, pick up Jackson's greatest hits album, Number Ones, which hits stores November 17th. Check out the full interview with Rodney Jerkins here.
