Souls Of Mischief - 93 'til Infinity (1993)

Hip Hop / Alternative / Rap

In my eyes, there is a big bold line between good hip hop, and shit hip hop. For example, "The Stanky Legg" by GS Boyz, ain't got nuthin' on "Fu-Gee-La" by The Fugees, much like "Please Excuse My Hands" by Plies, ain't shit compared to "Fight The Power" by Public Enemy. I guess it's about soul, substance, a message, an idea. Unfortunately, as the opposing Gangsta Rap movement developed into Hardcore Rap through the 90's and became mainstream material, the genre was tarnished with a negative reputation and aggressive connotation. What people need to know, is that not all rappers rap about bitches, big TVs, money, bling, cars, and weed, some rappers are intelligent, witty, passionate, socially conscious story tellers, like the mighty Souls Of Mischief.

93 'til infinity is SOM's debut release, and it's collectively recognised as one of the greatest rap albums of all time. Domino and Del Tha Funkee Homosapien were the two main producers for this release, with whom SOM went on to form the rap super group Hieroglyphics in 1995. Del and Domino's innovative sampling of random jazz, fusion, and funk records, mixed with their superb mastery of the desk, create thought provoking and moody sound layers. As for the the vocal performances by the then young A-Plus, Opio, Phesto and Tajai - prolific, charismatic, brash, wry, and witty. In short, brilliant.

Take a page from the world of 'Alternative Hip Hop', even if you hate hip hop, love Eminem, or think T-Pain is really creative. Even for a rock kid like me, it's one of the greatest albums I own, and I hope you will concur.

"One of hip-hop's great lost masterpieces".
