2 years on, the skinny, multi-lingual, multi-national, re-incarnation of Freddie Mercury, Mika, is back for round two, with another batch of his unashamedly cheesy pop songs.
Now, let's talk about Mika as a songwriter, because although I don't mind his music, I hate the way he regurgitates other people's talent. For example, everyone with a bit of musical history knowledge knows that "Relax (Take It Easy)" from Mika's debut album 'Life In Cartoon Motion' is blatant rip-off of Sheila and B. Devotion's "Spacer" and an interpolation of Cutting Crew's "(I Just) Died In Your Arms".
Similarly, lead single from 'The Boy Who Knew Too Much', "We Are Golden" is a blend of Belinda Carlisle's "Heaven Is A Place On Earth", Bon Jovi's "You Give Love A Bad Name", and a bit of the piano line from Annie Lennox's "Walking On Broken Glass". Not to mention "I See You" is almost exactly "Unfaithful" by Rihanna. So to say that this album is something groundbreakingly new or exciting is just complete crap.
Most of 'The Boy Who Knew Too Much' is exactly that. Regurgitated pop hooks, chord progressions, and melodies that have somehow subconsciously manifested themselves in Mika's mind and come out as his own songs.
But, do I really care? Not really. Mika's music is light-hearted, fun, and infectiously joyous, so why resist the urge to smile and dance in exchange for being sour?
There's no denying it, Mika can write really good pop songs, so enjoy it.
“They say shyness is a form of egotism, and you are only shy because you care too much about what people think of you, and maybe its true, maybe I am just an egotist. At least I have found a channel for it.”
