In recent months, Daytrotter.com has become one of my go-to sources for great new music. Every day, this site puts out a multi-song session by a contemporary musician or band, which is recorded at the website's studio. Along with the session, Daytrotter wordsmith Sean Moeller puts out an article which regularly features well-thought out metaphors and anecdotal imagery to accompany the recorded sounds. Furthermore, illustrator Johnnie Cluney draws up a great cartoon version of the group or individual artist being featured on any given day. (Oh! did I mention that Daytrotter includes free downloads of every song from every session!) Put it all together and you've got one of the best alternative music websites I've ever been exposed to.
I bring this all up now because I've been struck hard by one of their recent sessions featuring The Tallest Man On Earth, one of my favourite 21st century folk singers. The article speaks lucidly about the artist's search for catharsis in a world wrought with pain, despair, and loneliness. The tracks feature rearranged versions of some songs from The Tallest Man On Earth's 2008 album Shallow Graves. I've thrown up the one that strikes me the deepest in order to not only hook you into the work of this gravelroad-voiced Swedish folkster, but permanently draw you into what's going on at Daytrotter.com. It's stuff like this that, I think, is the future of the music industry. Free downloads for people like me and you, great exposure and artistic legitimacy for the artist, and the coolest job of all time for the people behind the Daytrotter experience.
