New Music: Shaky Hands: "We Are Young" [MP3]

Artist:
Had we but world enough, and time, the Shaky Hands probably wouldn't be in such a hurry. As it is, we're all gonna be McCains before we know it, so for now, these Portland, Ore.-based indie rockers' "We Are Young" clambers along like Tokyo Police Club on red alert, with a few more Neil Young tablatures in their browser histories. Taken from Lunglight, the Shaky Hands' forthcoming, Kill Rock Stars-stamped follow-up to their 2007 self-titled effort, "We Are Young" lobs bleak observations-- "There is no hero/ There is no man that's gonna come"-- over incongruously bouncy rhythms, Zombies-esque backing vocals, and guitars that sear even as they jangle. Out of the bloodstained verses emerges a quavering chorus, where the Shaky Hands' Nick Delffs, like the poets of old, turns the fleeting nature of youth into an impassioned come-on: "I always knew you'd be the one." Thus, though we cannot make the brief but chaotic closing guitar solo stand still, yet we can rewind it and make them play that shit again.
