Track:Summer Time Dues
There ain't no cure for the summertime... wait, what the deuce? Rather than take inspiration from the Eddie Cochran tune that the White Stripe's "Effect and Cause" sounds a lot like (unless you're Richard Ashcroft, getting sued is mostly a hip-hop thing), Broken Social Scene's Kevin Drew is paying his "Summer Time Dues" with this previously unreleased song, a tear-stained acoustic ballad that starts off like pre-Rock N Roll Ryan Adams. "Another shitty summer in my lungs," Drew sings, after some initial coughing. His voice is high, wounded, shaky. The sound of rain accompanies his solo guitar.
"Summer Time Dues" doesn't stay stripped-down for long, however, as rumbling percussion, grand orchestration, and ethereal backing vocals pile up over Drew's repeated, central question: "So what does that mean/ For you and me?" Ain't no cure for the summertime thunderstorm-- or a broken heart. Though I believe Wilco once came up with a way to fight loneliness. (via RCRD LBL)
