Sometimes the World Is So Random it Makes Me Smile

Sometimes the world is so random it makes me smile. For instance, I got three voicemails in quick succession on my cell phone from a dad who was trying to wake up his daughter. He kept saying things like, "Why won't you pick up the phone? Well, I guess you're dead or out dancing. Your mother told me to call and now you're not answering. Where are you? Well, if your leg falls off, we'll have to go to the hospital. It doesn't look good with only one leg" and other bizarre things like that. He was kind of mad but there was this weird sort of resignation in his voice, like he wasn't surprised that she wasn't picking up the phone and he was just saying these things out of duty.
I almost called the number back but the calls came in around 8 a.m. and I only saw the voicemails after noon, so I figured he'd found her by then. Either that or she was dead! I wonder what he thought when he realized he'd been leaving the messages on the wrong phone. Oops!
Another funny thing that made me laugh was that I got a hit on the blog from someone who was looking for "blog older swinger." I'm sure he (or she) was quite disappointed when they came upon my post about the band Vanilla Swingers! Oh dear.
Lastly, did you know there's now an online service you can sign up for that will let your on-line friends know when you've died so that they're not left wondering what happened to you when you suddenly disappear from the cyberworld? Seriously. It's called Deathswitch and it only costs $20/year to subscribe. This article tells all about it.
Since we're in random mode today, I thought I'd share a few songs that don't really have anything in common other than they make me smile, too.
Oren Lavie--"Her Morning Elegance" mp3 off The Opposite Side of the Sea (buy) I hardly ever think of good artist-to-artist comparisons, but this time I can safely say that this reminds me of Nick Drake, both the vocals and the music. So if you like Nick Drake, I think you'll like this a lot.
Rubicks--"Midas" mp3 off In Miniature (buy) This song is a couple of years old but there's something about it that's shiny and bright and lifts me, even though I don't think it's particularly happy. I like her defiance, I guess, when she sings "Don't try to save me, try to save me, try to save me, try to save me with your Midas touch."
Built to Spill--"Time Trap" mp3 off Keep it Like a Secret (buy) You know what I like about this? That it still sounds so freaking great after all this time. It's from 1999 but you'd never know it. Did you know BTS is coming out with a new album sometime later this year? (According to Under the Radar magazine.) I can't wait.
