A Little (3fer) Toxicity from the Artists Formerly Known As The Beach Boys...

Posted about 1 month ago

Well, hell, they are still known as the Beach Boys, but there was at least one Wilson present during these recordings. One only wishes it was the Wilson that co-stared with Tom Hanks in Castaway. And castawayt is what these songs should be from the Beach Boys catalog, perhaps inspiring some island culture into insipid mediocre lowest comon denominator music that will play wonderfully pool side when their island is ransacked by the Marriots and Hilton's in search of the next "it" vacation destination. Hell they could even call it Kokomo:

Thankfully I believe god is a benvolent one, so he would spare the world a "Kokomo" inspired civilization, in the only manner by which he seems to work - earthquakes, pestilence or a big wave:

Wipeout:

Well, maybe that's a little harsh. Maybe they could just relocate over in the pacific. "Somewhere Near Japan":

Heck, they love stuff like this over there.

Wow, it's pretty amazing that the least stinky of this trifecta-in-reverse is "Kokomo," which I have long thought of as one of the ghastliest singles ever. Maybe you should have titled this "The Beach Boys, formerly known as artists"....

contrabandwidth, I dutifully went with your flow, and now, after those smoothly crafted songs and videos, I feel that life is meaningless.  I don't....

This stone-cold Beach Boys fan must agree. This was the nadir. The only thing that could've been worse: them doing a hip-hop dance number called "Smurfin' U.S.A." - with the actual Smurfs.

God only knows (sorry) you know how to depress me. I've managed to banish everything from 'Kokomo' onwards. That's not The Beach Boys - that's the Mike Love/ Bruce Johnston smugfest. Nothing against Bruce, but one of my earliest interviews was with Bruce (Sunflower LP) and his easy, comfortable, SoCal-fishbowl elitist superiority really rubbed me the wrong way. Talked to Carl a couple of years later and he was the opposite - one of the sweetest guys I've met.

    Mike - I'm sure it's still possible.

Jonh - I live in South Florida, the land of fish bowl elitist superiority.  Needless to say, my inspiration for the post was driving past a trailer park named "Kokomo", conveniently with a boarded up trailer right behind the sign.  Had I a camera, I would have stopped.  I don't dig the "wasting away in Margaritaville" mentality, so many seem happy to profess (Jimmy Buffets "Fins" is the new Dolphin's theme song - gag!).  But I guess some love to revel in mediocrity.

I grew up in Pasadena, MD and my Science teacher would play before class "Little Girl from Pasadena" which was cool.  Oddly enough, "Kokomo" was one of the first songs I heard of theirs on the radio, on the same bus taking me to that Middle School.  Full circle baby.  Even if it a crappy song.

i am pretty sure i loathe every single day Kokomo ever got stuck in my head. and it's the sort of song that does that!

also, i didn't realize you could post through your MMN account and it shows in my feeds as from contrabandwidth. how neat is technology. (:

    Poe - Agreed!

I really don't like that my MMN and Contrabandwidth accounts have merged.  I post differently on both accounts.  CBW usually does Mog specific posts geared towards the community, and TYC is geared towards the blogosphere/not always music posts (but most of the time I find a way to tie it in).

I also can't find all my CBW stats that I used to have, now it just shows TYC, and I had some posts I liked that I want connected to the CBW profile.

Didn't John Phillips write the song "Kokomo"?

I never really understood why the Beach Boys would cover this song - when a genius like Brian Wilson could write them something far better.

And that's John Stamos in that Kokomo video...I don't remember him being in the original Beach Boys line-up.

I've always rebuilt my blogs - specifically here for MOG.  Yes, it was time consuming, but I felt it was a better result.  Now I'm considering going the MMN route, since they will be the same.

    Is this a good idea?
