WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

"American Folk Festival" Wednesdays 2-4pm this fall on WTBU

Posted 2 months ago
This fall I am once again spinning traditional folk, Americana, and folk-influenced tunes on WTBU. On the weekly show (which I DJ with my friend/housemate Sarah J. Berg), we play a mix of songs from old folk anthologies, American folk revivalists, and contemporary folk-influenced artists. Appropriately titled "American Folk Festival," the show airs every Wednesday from 2-4pm.

To help you all get really excited, I threw together a really quick 12-song mix of some essential American folk songs, including tracks by Leadbelly, Woody Guthrie, Odetta, Joan Baez, The Weavers, and Bob Dylan. Click here to download the entire thing! The full track list is after the jump.

On today's show, we were lucky to have David Wax (of David Wax Museum) in studio with us. David performed songs from David Wax Museum's new album, Carpenter Bird, which they are self-releasing next week before embarking on a two-month self-booked US tour. The songs are a unique mix of American folk influences with traditional Mexican folk. Today on air, David played an acoustic version of the traditional Mexican folk song that inspired the entire new album, and he explained his playing style as "a Mexican folk song, the way Bob Dylan would play it." Needless to say, the album is both intriguing and refreshing. It will most definitely be in WTBU's rotation this semester, and I'm sure will be making regular appearances on American Folk Festival playlists throughout the semester as well.
