Billy Corgan has been saying for a while that he planned for the next Smashing Pumpkins release to be something different than the traditional album format. In a lengthy post on SmashingPumpkins.com, Corgan announced Wednesday that the next "album" from the band will be made up of 44 songs given away for free online over the next year of so. The songs will be occasionally compiled into physical releases as limited edition EPs, with 11 EPs of four songs each. When the entire 'album,' titled Teargarden By Kaleidyscope, is completed, it will be released as a deluxe box set.Corgan says that the Pumpkins (which essentially consist of him and new drummer Mike Byrne) began recording the new material Tuesday (September 15), but he already has 53 songs written for the record. The first track is expected to be released right around Halloween.
Corgan writes, "The story of the album is based on 'The Fool's Journey', as signified in the progress of the Tarot. It is my intention to approach this by breaking down the journey of our life here into four phases as made by these different characters; the Child, the Fool, the Skeptic, and the Mystic." He added that "the music of Teargarden By Kaleidyscope harkens back to the original psychedelic roots of The Smashing Pumpkins: atmospheric, melodic, heavy, and pretty."
He concludes the post, "I am very committed to seeing this album through to its completion and very, very excited about the prospect of delivering new Smashing Pumpkins music to you in a unique and exciting way."
